Contributions
If you are a candidate, you must have an Official Agent who is responsible for keeping track of all contributions of services, money or property made to your campaign. Contributions may only be accepted by your Official Agent.
In order to accept contributions you must, in addition to appointing an Official Agent, open a campaign account at a financial institution in Nova Scotia and file Form 1 (PDF) with the Chief Electoral Officer at:
Elections Nova Scotia7037 Mumford Road, Suite 6
Halifax, NS B3L 2J1
Fax: 902-424-6622
There are new contribution rules in Nova Scotia.
- The Official Agent must record all contributions.
- Nova Scotia has contribution limits. The maximum contribution that an individual may make to a recognized party, its electoral district associations and its candidates, in a calendar year, is $5,000.
- Only residents of Nova Scotia may make contributions.
- Corporations, partnerships and trade unions cannot make political contributions. (Effective January 1, 2010)
- No anonymous contributions may be accepted. If the contributor cannot be identified the contribution must be remitted to the Chief Electoral Officer, who will in turn transfer it to the Minister of Finance.
- All contributions over $50 must be disclosed by the Official Agent.
